In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Quran: Chapter 3 Sipara ‘Tilkar Rosolu’, Sura: 2 ‘Al Baqarah’ ‘The Cow’, Verse: 283- 284:
Verse 283: And if you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then let there be a pledge taken (mortgaging), then if one of you entrusts the other, let the one who is entrusted discharge his trust (faithfully), and let him be afraid of Allah, his Lord. And conceal not the
evidence, for he who hides it, surely, his heart is sinful. And Allah is All-Knower of what you do.
Verse 284: To Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, and whether you disclose what is in your own selves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And Allah is able to do all things.
Difficult words: Scribe: the one who write. Pledge: to give something valuable to someone as a way of promising that you will pay them money later. Mortgage: borrow money with valuable possession as guarantee.
Explanation by samia2010oct: Verse 283 is about taking a loan for a fixed period of time. Actual way as Allah orders is to write, in the presence of two male witnesses or one male plus two female witnesses, the exact amount of loan taken and the exact period of time for the loan refund. Now the question arises if the loan taker, who does not know how to write, is in a journey and needs to take a loan immediately. The loan taker is unable to find
someone who can write for him. What must he do? Above Verse 283 answers such a difficulty. Verse 283 orders such a loan taker, that in the presence of two male witnesses or one male plus two female witnesses, he can give some valuable thing of his to the loan giver as a promise that he will refund the loan at a certain time. And at that time when he refunds back the loan to the loan giver he will take his valuable thing back as well from the loan giver. So the witnesses, the loan taker or the loan giver not any of them deceive the
others when the time of loan refund comes.
