In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Quran: Chapter 4, ‘Lan Tanalu’ ‘By no means shall you attain’, Sura: 4 ‘An-Nisa’ ‘The Women’, Verse: 25
Verse 25: And whoever of you have not the means wherewith to wed free believing women, they may wed believing girls from among those (slaves) whom your right hands possess, and Allah has full knowledge about your faith; you are one from another. Wed them with permission of their own folk (guardians or masters) and give them their bridal-money, Mahr, according to what is reasonable; they (the above said slave girls) should be chaste in wedlock, not adulterous, nor taking boyfriends. And after they have been taken in wedlock, if they commit, Fahishah, lewdness (illegal sex), their punishment is half of that for free women. This is for him among you who are afraid of being harmed in his religion or in his body; but it is better for you that you practice self- restraint, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Notes by samia2010oct: Bridal- money validates marriage of a man with a woman. If a man is not earning enough to pay bridal money of an honorable free believing woman and he is afraid of being harmed in his religion or in his body, he can wed believing girls from among those ‘whom your right hands possess’. ‘Your right hands possess’ means women captured in war. These women should have a free will to agree for wedding and permission from her guardians or masters must also be taken. Acceptance of Islam does not make a captured woman, a free woman. A Non Muslim woman has to accept Islam to marry a Muslim man. The best for men is to wed free believing women. Distinguishing characteristics of free believing women are they are chaste and honest in their living and conduct.
Islam abolishes slavery. Freeing slaves is appreciated in Islam.
Men and women must stay chaste in wedlock. Adultery and taking boyfriends or girlfriends is strongly prohibited in Islam.
It is Big Sin for men and women to commit adultery or to take boyfriends or girlfriends. For Big Sins, Gunaahe Kabira, there is the punishment of unbearable burning of whole body by Unending Fire. At this point we also remember that there are many sins for which the punishment by Allah starts in this world too and this sin is one of them.
Explanation from Ibne kaseer says—- … ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ خَشِيَ الْعَنَتَ مِنْكُمْ … ‘This is for him among you who is afraid of being harmed in his religion or in his body’; indicates that marrying slave girls, providing one satisfies the required conditions, is for those who fear for their chastity and find it hard to be patient and refrain from sex. In this difficult circumstance, one is allowed to marry a slave girl. However, it is better to refrain from marrying slave girls and to observe patience, for otherwise, the offspring will become slaves to the girl’s master.
Allah said, .. وَأَن تَصْبِرُواْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ وَاللّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ ﴿٢٥﴾ but it is better for you that you practice self-restraint, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
